Westhampton Beach, NY –The Westhampton Beach Fire Department responded to a

gas leak at 394 Dune Road in Westhampton Beach at 11:34 am on Friday, September

22nd.

The leak occurred when a landscaper operating a skid steer loader accidentally

knocked off the fill valve for a 1,000 gallon underground propane tank.   According to

one person on scene, the rapidly escaping gas sounded like a jet engine.  Firefighters

closed Dune Road near the scene and made connection to a hydrant to prepare

should there have been an explosion or fire.

Firefighters were on scene for approximately one hour while the gas vented itself.

There were no injuries to firefighters or others and no damage other than the tank.
